Rosacea is a chronic and often embarrassing disorder that generally affects the central region of the face. It can occur in any skin type but fair-skinned people over the age of thirty are most likely to develop it and its been given the nickname … the “Curse of the Celts” because in this country we are a predominantly fair skinned! In addition, current research indicates that women are three times more likely than men to develop it.

What is it?
Rosacea is the name commonly given to describe a form of redness on the skin. In all cases, the inflammation characteristic of this disorder indicates poor skin barrier health.

It typically first appears as redness or flushing on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead that may come and go. Over time, the redness tends to become ruddier and more persistent, and visible blood vessels may appear. Left untreated, bumps and pimples may develop, and in severe cases, particularly in men, the nose may grow swollen and bumpy from excess tissue. In many people, the eyes are also affected, feeling irritated and appearing watery or bloodshot.

The cause is not yet fully known but research has found it is normally a predisposition within your skin but it can flare up with triggers in your life style. Several researchers have theorized that rosacea is brought on by a species of mite, the Demodex Follicuorum (a microscopic mite) or Helicobacter Pylori (a type of bacteria).
